THE FOUNDER
CHEN QINGBIAO
Born in 1970 into a martial arts family in Shandong, he began training with his grandfather and father at the age of six, studying wushu, sanda and tai chi. He graduated from the Suzhou Institute of Physical Education in Anhui and the SCCCI Institute of Business in Singapore.
In 1992 he was handpicked from nearly a thousand entrants and signed with MediaCorp Singapore. The two decades that followed ran on both sides of the craft — fight choreographer on television dramas, on-screen alongside Aaron Kwok, Donnie Yen and Anita Yuen — while he kept competing. In 2004 he took double gold at the First World Traditional Wushu Festival against entrants from 62 countries, and free-sparring gold at the US International Kung Fu Championship the same year. In 2006 he wrote, directed and starred in the world's first kung fu musical.

SOME SOUNDS DON'T TRAVEL THROUGH A SCREEN
A bronze bell hangs over the floor, carved end to end. One strike and the sound rolls straight over the crowd. The fighting platform floats on a ring of water, curtains falling from its base. War drums line the perimeter, and the beat is the call to fight. Banners drop from all four sides, and the stands wrap the floor so that every seat faces the centre.
